Willingboro Town
Center is an innovative development in progress, dedicated to improving a
communitys quality-of-life. On the
site formerly known as Willingboro Plaza, a dormant retail complex, the
Willingboro Town Center development plan employs sustainable building practices
in creating a mix of retail and commercial establishments, adult housing and
community-oriented institutions. The Town Center
will be located on a 56-acre parcel of land in the Township of Willingboro, a
thriving community of 40,000 people in the center of Burlington County, New
Jersey. Although a vibrant, tight-knit
community, Willingboro currently lacks a town center and has suffered from
blight caused by closed businesses and economic decline along Route 130, the
main north-south thoroughfare in the county.
The Willingboro
Town Center project seeks to revitalize a parcel of land according to the
principles of green architecture and energy-efficient design with an emphasis
on public transportation and walking. This project embodies the
State of New Jersey's State Plan, aimed at redeveloping land into economically
valuable assets. This development will
be the first built of its kind in New Jersey and will serve as a prototype that
can be duplicated throughout the State and the country. The Town Center project stems from a partnership
between ReNEWal Realty and the Township of Willingboro. Willingboro has established a redevelopment
area and special zoning for the site and ReNEWal has entered into an agreement
to redevelop the property. Together,
this partnership has put in place the financing for construction and has built
consensus among local officials and the public through an extensive, and
ongoing, public participation process. The project will create a
mixed-use town center, capable of attracting national retailers, housing
developers, light industrial users, commercial tenants, government offices and
a variety of public amenities and institutions. Simultaneously, the redevelopment plan embraces the principles of
environmental protection and enhancement, seeking to use resources efficiently
and create green, open spaces. It also
seeks to make the project a center of state-of-the-art technology. The Burlington County Board of
Chosen Freeholders has embraced this project and has identified Willingboro
Plaza as a key target site needing redevelopment in the county-sponsored Route 130/Delaware River Corridor Strategic
Plan. The Freeholders have assisted
the project team by providing technical support and information about the
socio-economic landscape of the county. |
